A third oxygen atom is added to an O2 molecule to produce ozone. The extra oxygen atom adds an unpaired electron, making the O3 ozone molecule unstable. The power of ozone is derived from this instability. Simply said, the ozone molecule with its spare electron has too much energy to be a stable and happy trio and is anxious to abandon the extra oxygen atom and find a new receptive location to donate the singlet electron with all of its excess energy.
In human physiology its the mitochondria and its ATP-generating machinery that are the lucky recipients of this extra energy obtained from the third oxygen atom and its unpaired singlet electron.
